Willie Mays (Birmingham Black Barons) and Hank Aaron (Indianapolis Clowns) were (by their own admission) not power hitters during their tenure in the Negro Leagues. Who would’ve guessed that their potent bats would have produced 1,415 home runs over the course of their collective careers? The two Hall of Fame outfielders are the subject of this pair of watercolors on poster signed by artist Mike Leipier. Due to lack of exemplars, artist signature is offered without authentication.
Willie Mays watercolor: 15-1/2 x 23 -1/2” 1993 painting depicting “The Say Hey Kid” with his bat on his shoulder in a Giants uniform. A green patch of grass is located on the bottom of the piece with his shadow turning the patch slightly brown. Mays appears to be smiling and looking off into the distance. The watercolor has light staining and light to moderate soiling that has caused rippling on the bottom fourth of the piece. Signed by artist Mike Leiper in Sharpie;
Hank Aaron watercolor: 21x28 1994 painting with “Hammerin’ Hank” in portrait mode with a half-smile staring straight ahead. Presents in (EX) condition with moderate peripheral wear and some edge/corner wear. Beautiful colors and shadows decorate the piece of the "true" all time home run champion. Signed by artist Mike Leiper in Sharpie.
