From the inception of the American League in 1901 through the early-1930s, the Philadelphia Athletics enjoyed great success, with several great dynasties having dominated the League. By 1940 it was the worst of times for Connie Mack’s “White Elephants” as they finished dead last 36 games out of first with an even 100 losses. Despite their woeful record, the A’s still fielded some solid players that were worth the price of admission such as Wally Moses, Frankie Hayes, Sam Chapman, Dick Siebert and HOF great Al Simmons, who have signed the offered 1940 team photo.

Framed and matted to overall dimensions of 19x17 in a stylish and serviceable frame, this ancient photo shows a visible portion of 13x10. Though multiple creases place the photo in the lesser condition tier, it remains appealing with sharp player images, abundant gloss and genuine period authenticity. A total of (30) signatures are detectable, but the title of this lot announces (24) due to those of manager Connie Mack and coach Lena Blackburne being clubhouse versions and also (4) have deteriorated to the point of being undetermined. The (24) recognized autographs range (“6-7” to “2-3”) with keys Al Simmons (“6-7”, d.1956), Dick Siebert (“5-6”, d.1978), Wally Moses (“4-5”, d.1990), Sam Chapman (“4”, d.2006) and Frankie Hayes (“2-3”, d.1955).

The balance of (19) recognizable signers includes Herman Besse (d.1972), Buddy Hancken, Dee Miles, Hal Wagner, Earle Brucker, coach Dave Keefe, Buck Ross, Ed Huesser (d.1956), Benny McCoy, Bill Lillard, Al Brancato, Nelson Potter, Al Rubeling, John Babich, George Caster (d.1955), Bill Beckmann, Chubby Dean (d.1970), coach Charlie Berry (d.1972) and minor leaguer Autry Mitchell. Auction LOA from JSA.
