Witness the birth of our great national sports holiday. Played on 1/12/69, the third matchup for pro football supremacy between the NFL and AFL was actually the first such event to be officially touted as the “Super Bowl”. Hype and hysteria were found in plenty at this clash of the football titans, which featured Joe Namath and the New York Jets vs. the mighty Baltimore Colts, who were considered no less than NFL royalty. No stranger to the party scene, a reportedly intoxicated “Broadway Joe” showed up at an event held three days before the big game and answered a rowdy Colts fan with his legendary quote "We're gonna win the game. I guarantee it.". Set amid marching bands, Apollo astronaut appearances and a rabid press corps, Namath delivered on his guarantee, guiding the underdog Jets to the promised land with a 16-7 victory. In doing so, Namath solidified the legitimacy of the AFL, while punching his ticket to Hall of Fame enshrinement. That event is remembered with this 1/12/69 ticket stub (PSA Authentic) with appropriate image of the Lombardi Trophy, printed with title “Third World Championship Game”. The yellow variation stub presents well on the front aside from some corner wear and light creasing, but staining on the reverse likely makes it a low-grade specimen.
