Put all the pieces together to win this vintage piece of Americana starring the great Babe Ruth. This unique amusement was created in the folk art tradition with a fabulous result. Crafted with thirty-five 1-1/2” wood cube blocks, this singular piece takes the form of a puzzle with six possible outcomes, all of which are pre-war paper advertisements. When assembled this puzzle measures 7-1/2 x 10-1/2”, housed in a homemade wood tray in solid condition with overall dimensions of 8-1/2 x 11-1-1/2”.

Six-sided wood cubes are laminated with paper advertisements taken from period publications and cut up to fit the 1-1/2” square surfaces of the blocks. These blocks must be arranged to form complete ad pages with: 1.) Red Rock Cola with a Babe Ruth endorsement  in the form of a batting pose art image over a baseball; 2.) Ivory Soap with a little girl in red cleaning her toys in a washtub; 3.) Mennen’s Talcum Powder with a little girl peering through curtains at her mother; 4.) Kingfisher Lines fishing lines with a woman catching fish; 5.) Clark’s O.N.T. Spool Cotton Thread with two girls and a spool of thread; and 6.) Lion Coffee with a girl and her doll and a Christmas card giveaway promotion.

All of the puzzle images are securely adhered and remain very attractive, with the Ruth puzzle the boldest of the bunch. Colors are vibrant and surfaces are glossy, suggesting they were coated lightly with shellac or some other protective clear coat. Moderate wear, light soling and small occasional bits of surface loss only serve to add to the vintage appeal of this one-of-a-kind item.
