Afforded the status of "National Pastime" early on, baseball made itself into America's top sporting diversion. When the time came for the recognized 100th Anniversary of the game, it was cause for great fanfare and celebration. A fascinating memento from this celebratory period is this scarce 1939 "One Hundred Years Of Baseball" dual-sided commemorative poster. Printed with an extensive and impressive array of stats, facts and photos, this informative advertising piece chronicle's the games history through its first century of existence.
Some of the many highlights are: an art rendering of play at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, NJ; photos of Ruth, Mack, Cobb, Young, Mathewson, Cartwright, Doubleday, Wagner and others; the newly founded Baseball Hall of Fame; and team photos of the 1869 Reds, 1876 Cubs and 1901 White Sox. Also featured are schedules for the 1939 season and stats for the 1938 AL Champion New York Yankees.
Measuring 21x28, this handsome poster shows moderate age-appropriate wear to rate as (GD-VG). Both sides are bright and glossy with distinct text and photos, making this vintage treasure well suited for display. Wisely rolled for preservation rather than folded, this crisp sheet shows many minor flaws, but fortunately no major ones.
