A year and a day after the doors to the Baseball Hall of Fame were opened, the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs were persuaded to play an exhibition game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, NY. This marked the first time two Major League teams played at the historic field, said to have been laid out in a cow pasture by namesake Abner Doubleday way, way back in 1839.
This sturdy program (VG-EX) reports in handsome condition with a solid spine and crisp heavy stock pages. The interior scoring grids are recorded in pencil for the seven inning game, won by the Cubs 10-9. Listed among the printed rosters are HOFers Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Lefty Grove, Gabby Hartnett and Billy Herman. Williams, Foxx, Grove, Cronin and Herman are also listed in the penciled line-ups, with “Teddy Ballgame” noted as having hit two bombs.
